SANTO DOMINGO.- Employees from various departments of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), as well as officials and contractors, participated in the Eucharist celebrated in honor of the victims of the Jet Set nightclub tragedy, which has so far claimed the lives of 231 people.
The religious service, which took place in the main hall of the institution's club, was led by the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, Ramón Benito Ángeles, who said that the moment is an opportunity to strengthen our faith, to share it in a fraternal and supportive way with those affected.

“I ask for a special blessing today at this Eucharist, so that these words may truly help us in our personal, institutional, family, and community lives,” he said. Benito Ángeles referred to the more than 200 victims of the tragedy, among them Eduardo Guarionex Estrella and his wife Alexandra Grullón, as well as Fernando Reyes, a former employee of the Ministry of Public Works.
He also acknowledged the Military and Police Commission's commitment to the public this Holy Week, extending his blessing to the men and women who will be working on the operations. "You offer your sacrifice and time with dedication, with a deep sense of vocation and love for the lives of our brothers and sisters, through this Ministry which has always had this responsibility to save lives.".
He called on citizens to take all necessary precautions and blessed the lives of those who will be traveling during this Holy Week holiday.
Gilberto Valdez, the institution's Administrative and Financial Director, thanked, on behalf of Minister Eduardo Estrella, the Estrella family, and the family of collaborator Fernando Reyes, the more than 400 men who participated in the search and rescue efforts for the victims.
“I want to thank our president, Luis Abinader, who immediately learned of the situation and activated all rescue and emergency mechanisms; also our minister, who went to the JET Set at 2:00 in the morning to lead that command of people who were there, for a moment he didn't know that his son, nor our collaborator Fernando, were present,” he said.
He also thanked Monsignor Benito Angeles, “for bringing words of encouragement during this difficult and painful time.” He asked all the institution's staff to do their utmost in the performance of their duties, “so that this administration will be a landmark in history, as was Eduardo Guarionex's wish.”.
“I thank everyone for their prayers, those who accompany our Public Works family, as well as the visit of the contractors, officials and employees who are here; those prayers have reached each and every one of us,” he added.
