SANTO DOMINGO- Four of the provinces that experienced the greatest growth in the country in the last ten years, according to preliminary data from the 2022 National Population and Housing Census, offered last week by the National Statistics Office (ONE), are those that registered the largest number of properties before the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII), in the period 2018-2022.
La Altagracia province, home to the Dominican Republic's main tourist destination and the fastest-growing region according to the census, registered a total of 9,467 properties during those four years, according to figures from the DGII (General Directorate of Internal Revenue). The ONE (National Statistics Office) reports that the population of this province grew from 273,210 inhabitants in 2010 to 446,060 in 2022, representing a 63.27% increase.
Santiago de los Caballeros, which for the first time has moved into second place with a population of 1,074,648, surpassing the National District, registered 3,920 properties with the DGII (General Directorate of Internal Revenue) in four years. In 2010, it had 963,422 inhabitants.
Santo Domingo, where according to preliminary data from the 2022 census 2,769,559 people live, was the third province to register the highest number of properties in the DGII from 2018 to 2022, with a figure of 3,055. It increased by 395,219 people in the last ten years.
La Vega, which went from having 394,205 inhabitants in 2010 to 442,720 in 2022, registered 1,767 properties in the General Directorate of Internal Taxes in four years.
During the aforementioned period, the number of properties in the Dominican Republic grew from 63,038 in 2018 to 95,774 in 2022, with Pedernales registering the fewest properties, just one unit, coinciding with the preliminary data of the National Population and Housing Census that places it among the provinces that experienced the smallest growth, adding only 2,788 people.
Other provinces
La Romana, which increased by 42,482 inhabitants, registered 608 properties; San Cristóbal, which increased by 118,898 inhabitants, registered 555 properties; while San Pedro de Macorís, included among those that experienced the greatest population growth in the 2022 census, in relation to 2010, registered 553 properties from 2018 to 2022.
Although they are not registered within the populations with the greatest growth, Puerto Plata (1,757), Espaillat (1,440) and Hato Mayor (1,955), were among the provinces that registered the highest number of properties in the DGII, in the aforementioned period.
Housing
According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census, the Dominican Republic has 4,418,619 dwellings. 720,200 are unoccupied and 3,689,348 are occupied.
La Altagracia has 220,039 existing dwellings, 49,053 of which are vacant. According to the census, Santiago has 452,590 dwellings, 75,581 of which are vacant and 374,097 occupied. Santo Domingo is the province with the highest number of vacant dwellings, with 170,143 out of a total of 1,105,316. It has 934,478 occupied dwellings. In La Vega, there are 33,674 vacant dwellings out of a total of 186,862.
