Overcoming limiting beliefs in real estate

By Raquel Salas

Special for El Inmobiliario

In this final article of the year and in the "Design Your Map to the Future" series, I want to address the crucial importance of identifying and transforming the limiting beliefs we've carried throughout our lives. In the previous article, I discussed vision and goals, and how combining both is fundamental to growth in the real estate sector. However, we can't ignore the fact that if we're bound by limiting beliefs, we could become stuck. What you set out to achieve in 2025 could end up in the same drawer of memories as the goals you set for yourself in previous years.

My intention in this article is to encourage you to identify and challenge those limiting beliefs that may be hindering your success. Furthermore, I will offer practical strategies to reprogram your mindset, boost your self-confidence, and adopt a growth mindset that will allow you to reach your full potential.

Understanding limiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs are ideas or convictions a person holds about themselves or the world around them that restrict their ability to act, grow, or achieve their goals. These beliefs can be conscious or unconscious and often manifest as negative or self-critical thoughts.

The causes of these beliefs are diverse: negative past experiences, family influences, social and cultural norms, fear of failure, and constant social comparison. Traumatic situations or previous failures can generate a negative self-image, while expectations imposed by family and society can reinforce these beliefs.

Impact on your real estate career

Limiting beliefs not only affect your personal life but also impact your career as a real estate agent. In addition to the personal burden you unconsciously carry, you must contend with the labels and stigmas that arise when exploring the world of real estate. Many of us who enter this sector come from other professional backgrounds and face disparaging comments like, "Everyone wants to sell houses now," or "You're not cut out for it." I could continue citing a series of discouraging remarks, but what I really want to do is dismantle these assertions.

The phrase "everyone wants to sell houses now" may hold some truth, as many people enter the sector looking for a lifeline, believing it to be a quick and easy source of income. However, only those who persevere and withstand the challenges of this profession manage to survive. If you're still considering developing your career as a real estate agent, remember that you're not just part of the crowd; you're unique, and that's an advantage.

On the other hand, the statement "you're not cut out for that" is common not only in real estate but in many professions. While we all have natural aptitudes, it's crucial to remember that with discipline and dedication we can develop new skills. If being a real estate agent resonates with you and you're passionate about more than just the end-of-month paycheck, don't be discouraged by the need to improve in certain areas.

Strategies to overcome limiting beliefs

My mentor, John C. Maxwell, in his book "Talent Is Never Enough," states: "Preparation positions talent, and practice hones it." This makes it clear that talent alone is not enough; it needs to be accompanied by preparation. If any of your limiting beliefs are rooted in the idea that you're not good at real estate, I encourage you to identify your strengths and areas for improvement. Enhance your skills and be intentional about acquiring tools to develop in those areas where you need to improve.

If you want to succeed, it's crucial to focus on what you can do, not what you can't. Talent may be a gift, but success must be earned. As an integrative personal development coach and motivational author, I can't let this year end without leaving you with some key questions:

1. What limiting beliefs have you identified in yourself?

2. How do these beliefs affect your performance?

3. What new beliefs do you want to adopt?

4. What actions can you take to reinforce these new beliefs?

I propose a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) exercise to transform those beliefs: close your eyes and imagine a situation where you feel your limiting beliefs are holding you back. Then, visualize a safe and positive place. Associate that place with a new, empowering belief. Open your eyes and join the thumb and forefinger of your preferred hand to anchor the new belief. Practice this whenever you need to remember your new belief.

As this year comes to a close, I encourage you to let go of limiting beliefs and embrace a future full of possibilities. May 2025 be a year of growth, learning, and success in your real estate career and in life. Remember that every step you take forward is a step toward realizing your dreams.

I wish you a prosperous and transformative new year!
