SANTO DOMINGO- The general director of the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), Leonardo Reyes Madera, stated this Tuesday that the institution is working on a document that will be donated to the Ministry of Education (MINERD) with the purpose of educating public school students on earthquake-related topics.
“We are working on materials to donate to the education sector to begin raising awareness among children, and we have even been inquiring about a book, turned into stories, for children up to 10 years old, which clearly and simply defines what earthquakes are and how to respond before, during, and after an earthquake,” the official noted.
He said that the Dominican Republic has made progress, but in terms of education there is still much to be done, especially in universities, and he said that they need to start producing engineering professionals who can handle earthquakes and hurricanes.

He stated that university curricula should be reviewed and said that he has been an educator for many years referring to this need.
He emphasized that since his arrival at the general directorate of the government entity, he has participated in all the preventive drills carried out by the Emergency Operations Center (COE) that seek to prepare citizens to face the effects of a possible earthquake.
He expressed these and other considerations while participating in the program “La Mirada” produced by the communicators, on Radio Televisión Dominicana, channel 4 (RTVD).
