SANTO DOMINGO– The word "multitasking" is all the rage in the agonizingly fast-paced world of modern life. Some consider it beneficial to take on several roles simultaneously, but some experts contradict this opinion, asserting that it is neither effective nor productive.
Expert José Fernández argues that this definition is a lie because trying to do several tasks at the same time will not achieve effective results or increase productivity in any way.
“Multitasking makes you lose focus, it makes you go to many places. When you focus on doing one thing first and then the other, you will be more effective and more productive,” commented Fernández, during his talk before more than one hundred real estate agents from the country, who attended the course organized by Keller Williams Dominicana.
As part of his presentation, the experienced agent conducted an exercise in which the attendees had to place numbers and letters in different ways. “The first time, there were many distractions, and people forgot the letters. When we assigned them specific tasks, we observed good results.”.

Fernández came to the country to teach the course “Just One Thing”, based on the book by real estate entrepreneur Gary W. Keller, where he shared and analyzed with a group of actors in the real estate sector, concepts and recommendations contained in the document, which he says is his main working tool, after the Bible.
What Fernández does recommend is a disciplined life, applying the concept in its true sense because “many people believe they are disciplined when they are not; they have created habits and applied discipline to them. Disciplined people are those who have created habits in their lives and get up every day knowing exactly what they have to do.”.
Another of his analyses is that not everything matters equally, "the reality is that not everything matters equally because there are things that are more important than others.".
He advises people to do their main activities and decision-making in the morning, when willpower is at its peak, because energy runs out at the end of the day.
“Everyone would like to have a balanced life, but absolute balance doesn't exist,” the expert asserts. He believes that living a fulfilling life is an act of balance; achieving extraordinary results takes time, which makes perfect balance impossible.
It encourages thinking big, letting go of limitations, assuming that everything is possible, and that the opposite is having a small mindset. “When we think that big is bad, smallness begins to resurface within us. We've been led to believe that thinking big is bad, that we can't set big goals or envision our future plans.”.
Fernández spoke about the seven areas of life: spiritual, physical, personal, relational, work, business, and finance.
He recommends living with purpose and prioritizing your life's agenda. "Time is the most important gift you can give to another person; clients don't like to wait. When you're on time, you start making a difference. If we're late, it's because we're not planning well," he observed to the participating agents.
About the course
It took place last week at Spirit Coworking in Santo Domingo, with a mixed audience of new and experienced real estate agents.
José Fernández explains that it is a method that he has applied to large and small audiences, since the concepts apply to all areas of life.
He has been teaching it for five years in the United States, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and now in the Dominican Republic. He says that after the workshops, he regularly receives positive feedback from graduates who have applied at least one of his concepts in their businesses and have made a big difference.
