The government has no plans to increase electricity rates, assures Joel Santos

The official argued that the strategy must be viewed holistically, since the sustainability of the sector does not depend on a single variable

SANTO DOMINGO– Although the National Multi-Year Public Sector Plan 2025-2028, prepared by the Ministry of Finance and Economy, states that the country has an outdated electricity tariff system that needs to be increased, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, assured yesterday that the Dominican electricity sector is not currently working on implementing an increase in electricity rates and that the authorities' efforts are focused on continuing to improve the system's performance, increase the energy supply, and continue reducing losses for distribution companies.

The official pointed out that the immediate agenda of that state agency and the institutions in the sector is aimed at achieving a favorable evolution of the electrical system and not at working on an increase in the rate.

Santos, who is also the president of the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED), explained that the possibility of adjusting the tariff is included in the 2025-2028 National Multi-Year Plan for the Public Sector, as part of the measures contemplated to continue addressing the structural challenges of the electricity sector. However, he clarified that its inclusion in that planning document does not mean that there is currently a decision or a process underway to implement it.

The minister indicated that the priority of the energy authorities is to continue making progress on the variables that will strengthen the sustainability and quality of the electricity service, especially through the incorporation of new generation and greater efficiency in distribution.

This effort is complemented by the strategy of reducing technical and commercial losses of Edenorte, Edesur and EDE Este, one of the main challenges facing the system and which has a direct impact on its financial results.

Santos noted that the authorities are working on actions aimed at improving distribution networks, increasing operational efficiency, strengthening metering and regularizing users, among other measures intended to progressively reduce loss levels.

The official argued that the strategy must be viewed holistically, because the sustainability of the sector does not depend on a single variable; rather, on simultaneous progress in generation, transmission, distribution, efficiency and management.
