SANTO DOMINGO – In recent years, the Dominican Republic has undergone a significant transformation in its energy matrix, driven by a growing commitment to clean energy. This shift not only responds to the global need to address climate change, but also to a national strategy aimed at ensuring energy security, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and attracting foreign investment.
Investing in renewable energy has become one of the main development opportunities in the country, thanks to its favorable natural conditions, its legal framework of incentives and the constant growth of the energy sector.
Benefits of investing in clean energy in the Dominican Republic:
1. Sustained growth of the energy sector
The nation has incorporated more than 30 renewable generation projects in recent years, driven mainly by national and international private investment, as well as by public policies of the Dominican State through the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the National Energy Commission (CNE), with the support of the Government of the Dominican Republic.
Among the most outstanding projects are:
- Girasol Solar Park, one of the largest in the Caribbean, developed by the EGE Haina business group.
- Los Cocos and Larimar Wind Farms, located in the southern region of the country, take advantage of the wind potential in the area.
- Monte Plata Solar Park, promoted by the private company AES Dominicana.
- Matafongo Wind Farm, developed by investors in the energy sector with state regulatory support.
2. Attractive tax incentives
The main legal instrument that supports investment in renewable energy is Law No. 57-07 on Incentives for the Development of Renewable Energy Sources and their Special Regimes, enacted in 2007.
This regulation establishes a key incentive scheme for investors, including:
- Exemption of up to 100% of import taxes on equipment
- ITBIS exemption on the purchase of renewable energy equipment
- Tax credit of up to 40% of the investment cost for self-producers
- Tax benefits applicable to Income Tax (ISR) in qualified projects
The central objective of the law is to stimulate private investment in renewable sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and promote the country's energy diversification.
3. Energy security and stability
Diversifying the energy mix strengthens the security of the national electricity sector, reducing dependence on imported fuels and thus improving price stability.
This creates a more predictable environment for investors and companies in the sector.
4. Positive environmental impact
Investing in clean energy directly contributes to:
- Reduction of CO₂ emissions
- Less air pollution
- Conservation of natural resources
5. Job creation and economic development
The growth of the renewable energy sector is driving job creation in areas such as:
- Plant engineering and construction
- Installation of solar panels and wind turbines
- Specialized technical maintenance
Furthermore, to boost local economies in rural areas where many projects are being developed.
6. Long-term reduction of energy costs
Although the initial investment in clean energy sources can be high, their operating costs are low because they utilize natural resources such as the sun and wind. This allows for a return on investment over time and ensures a more stable, predictable, and economically competitive electricity generation compared to fossil fuels.
The combination of favorable natural resources, tax incentives, and market growth makes the country a strategic destination for renewable energy investment. It represents not only a financial opportunity but also a direct contribution to the country's economic development.
