SANTO DOMINGO- The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) reported that it will save more than RD$5.3 million per month starting next January by eliminating the rental of premises for that entity and for the Rural and Suburban Electrification Unit (UERS) in different parts of the country.
The six levels of the CDEEE building have been undergoing a repair process for several weeks at a cost of RD$21 million to house the staff of the UERS that operated in the La Esperilla neighborhood and the MEM that operated in the Naco sector, as well as correcting faults in roofs, floors, bathrooms and walls on each level of the institution's old building, explains a note from the MEM.
The building had cracks and structural damage to the ceilings and floors that jeopardized the safety of the occupants,” the statement said.
He clarifies that the final budget is RD$21 million, not RD$34 million, since changes to elevators and air conditioners initially planned were left out.
It details that the work includes repairing the roofs, including applying a fine finish to the roof of the CDEEE building, which had multiple leaks; replacing floors on levels 6, 5, and 3; repairing ceilings, bathrooms, walls, and adapting new areas to house UERS employees, with their furniture and work equipment.
He adds that the current administration terminated the rental contracts for premises that UERS had in the capital and the interior and before the end of the year will hand over to the Development and Export Bank (BANDEX) the former premises of the Ministry located on Tiradentes Avenue.
Itemized expenses
“To get an idea of the savings that the handover of these premises will mean, it is necessary to point out that the UERS was paying about US$52,897.73 per month for its headquarters in the La Esperilla neighborhood (equivalent to RD$3,015,170.61); RD$65,000 for the premises in Santiago; RD$78,000 for its headquarters in San Francisco de Macorís and RD$70,180 for its premises in Azua,” the note explains.
While the MEM was paying BANDEX RD$1.5 million for its headquarters on Tiradentes Avenue; RD$325,000 for another small premises located next door and RD$260,000 for a plot of land that served as a parking lot located near those facilities.
