SANTO DOMINGO.- More than five months after the tragedy that plunged the entire country into mourning, with the death of more than 230 people, when the roof of the emblematic Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican capital collapsed, the defense of the siblings Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, requested a new expert assessment in which international technicians proposed by them participate and assisted by a technical consultant.
The defense of those involved bases its proposal for investigative proceedings and resolution of petitions on articles 208, 286, 133 and 192 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPP).
Miguel Valerio, who heads the legal team, recalled that the Attorney General's Office has only presented the preliminary report that it ordered the experts from ONESVIE to make, whom it charged with technically investigating what caused the collapse of the roof of the entertainment center on April 8 of this year, leaving a toll of 236 dead and more than 180 injured.
“What we are requesting is an expert opinion that will help us to have our defense tool,” Valerio said as he left the courthouse where Judge Amaury Martínez decided to postpone hearing the petition, the newspaper Hoy reported today.
Victims' lawyers
They acknowledge that legally they cannot oppose the counter-petition requested by the defense of the Espaillat brothers, but they can oppose the foreign experts they propose "because article 255 says that these must meet a series of conditions that from my point of view the experts they are offering do not meet because they are presenting resumes in English and alleged degrees that do not appear online.".
