SANTO DOMINGO – The Minister of Public Works and Communications, Deligne Ascención, announced yesterday, Friday, that the construction of the new bridge that will replace the floating bridge connecting Santo Domingo East with the National District will be put out to tender for international companies, because local companies lack the technology required by the design conceived for the project.
“It is an international tender, because local companies in the country do not have the technology for the type of design we have made and we are demanding experience; the new floating bridge will be a lift bridge in an automatic way,” the official explained.
He stated that next week he will upload to the institution's website the information "regarding the bridge that will replace the Floating Bridge, which greatly alleviates vehicular traffic, especially during peak hours.".

He explained that Public Works in its national budget had about 32 billion pesos, plus 6 billion from the RD-Vial Trust, and 2.3 billion financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The official said that the investment resulted in the completion of 310 projects that were delivered and that cover almost the entire national territory.
“We have completed and inaugurated projects in all 31 provinces and in the National District, and we are still carrying out important work.”.
He also highlighted that a large part of last year's budget has been invested in infrastructure maintenance, a policy that has been a priority in the current administration.
He added that in terms of road rehabilitation and asphalt paving, in three years of President Luis Abinader's administration, 22 million square meters have been completed, which means that a large part of the national territory has been covered.
“The work projects in these three years have been designed with a development and impact plan, consistent with the government's strategy, and among these development hubs we can mention that Pedernales has been prioritized, and the South circuit, from November 6th, where we have worked on the road infrastructure, to make this investment sustainable,” he said.
He explained that Pedernales received its first cruise ship at the beginning of the year, and although they arrived by sea, their passengers were transported by land.
“To facilitate this transfer, we built a road that goes from the Cabo Rojo dock to the Pedernales intersection, and we are working from that Pedernales-Enriquillo intersection on the completion and finishing of the Barahona-Enriquillo road, a stretch of 22 kilometers.”.
In other news, Ascención said that President Abinader has allocated funds from the new airport agreement for the construction of a bridge parallel to the Francisco J. Peynado Airport, “already with a design and a legal issue that we are reviewing; if the solution is positive, it should be ready in a few weeks.”
