LAS TERRENAS, SAMANÁ –There will be no change of location. The iconic Fisherman's Village, a symbol of this tourist destination, will be rebuilt on the same site it has occupied since its founding. This decision was reached by the community and the Ministry of Tourism during the third public hearing, where they unanimously agreed to its reconstruction on the same land where it stood before being destroyed by a fire last September.
“It has been overwhelmingly ratified that the Los Pescadores Village must be built here, in the place where the history and essence of Las Terrenas are found,” declared David Collado, Minister of Tourism, after listening to the opinions of representatives of community associations.
In one of the interventions, the absence in the design of the characteristic colors that identify Las Terrenas was questioned, to which Minister Collado responded that he asked the architects to add color, so that it reflects the essence of the town.
He stated that the design that has been made is the most environmentally friendly and the most appropriate if we talk about culture, history and tradition.
“The reality is that we had to listen to the people, to the Minister of the Environment who had a position, and that we had to come and ratify that the Los Pescadores Village will be built here,” emphasized Minister Collado.
He reaffirmed that reaching the tourist community of Las Terrenas is a demonstration of the Tourism Cabinet's commitment to making Samaná and the beach area the unique and fashionable destination in the Caribbean.
The meeting, led by the Minister of Tourism and attended by the senator for the province, Pedro Catrain, and the technical team of the Committee for Infrastructure in Tourist Zones (CEIZTUR), had as its main objective the presentation of the design to be used in the work, donated by the architect Carlos Aguilar, from the international firm VGA.
The third public hearing, held a few meters from the beach, was characterized by diverse opinions and proposals from community members and neighborhood association leaders regarding aspects of the design and future location of the project.
Senator Pedro Catrain, present at the public hearing, stated that the bidding process for the project will be completed as quickly as possible, while assuring the residents that they can have absolute confidence that the Pueblo Los Pescadores will be rebuilt in its former location.
The legislator praised the fame and growth that the town of Las Terrenas has gained by representing 40 nationalities around the world.
Also present at the event was the mayor of Las Terrenas, Eduardo Esteban, who coordinated the participation of community members in the meeting.
Representing Mitur were part of the CEIZTUR technical team, headed by its director Gabriel Español, and Shaney Peña, Director of Planning and Projects (DPP).
History
Located in the heart of Las Terrenas, the Pueblo de los Pescadores (Fishermen's Village) was originally the main landing place for local fishermen. Over time, it transformed into an entertainment hub with its colorful row of trendy, waterfront restaurants and bars, featuring outdoor terraces with French, American, or Dominican menus and panoramic views of Las Terrenas.
A devastating fire destroyed all the restaurants and bars located there last September. This place is one of the main tourist attractions.
