Sleep in this 'bee and bee' Air surrounded by more than 1 million bees in southern Italy

Funded through crowdfunding, the structure cost around €16,000. It was built in Rocco's beautiful olive grove and consists of a single room surrounded by nine apiaries containing a total of one million worker bees.

Today, May 20th, is World Bee Day, and to mark the occasion, an Italian beekeeper has become the host of the first beehive available through Airbnb, where guests can sleep surrounded by a million bees. This unique house has been built in the idyllic olive grove of Rocco, the host, just outside the charming village of Grottole in southern Italy. It can now be booked on the platform, and all proceeds will go to the bee conservation projects of the NGO Wonder Grottole.

Spacious and incredibly welcoming, this home is part of Airbnb's "Unique" category, which launched last week along with 56 other new categories. Airbnb's categories organize homes based on what makes them unique, making it easier for people to discover places they wouldn't otherwise find.

About space

Local beekeeper Rocco Filomeno came up with the idea of building the beehive to raise awareness and promote respect for bees. His dream became a reality under the guidance of the NGO Wonder Grottole and thanks to the designs of David Tagliabue, a specialist in these structures. Funded through crowdfunding, the structure cost around €16,000. It was built in Rocco's beautiful olive grove and consists of a single room surrounded by nine apiaries containing a total of one million worker bees.

"This is the first place in the world where you can sleep immersed in the sound and aroma of honey characteristic of bees, experiencing 'beekeeping therapy' in the most authentic and natural way.".

About the stay

Rocco, host of the Air “bee and be” and a beekeeper, will welcome guests and give them their first lesson on bees, explaining how to live alongside them. Once inside the mini-house, through the skylight, guests can observe a working hive with over a million bees and fall asleep to its gentle buzzing (famous for its relaxing effect). Rocco will also offer them a breakfast of ricotta, strawberries, homemade cookies, and, of course, honey.
