SANTO DOMINGO.-The Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo began the Housing Improvement Project, which includes the repair of 140 houses belonging to poor families in the San Antón, Santa Bárbara, San Miguel and San Lázaro sectors.
The aim is to repair homes that are in poor condition in order to integrate them into the Colonial City rehabilitation project.
The Housing Improvement Program in the Colonial City (Promevi) is financed by the European Union and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and seeks to improve the quality of life and the economy of residents in the northern part of the old town.
According to the Program Coordinating Unit (UCP), which is executed by the Ministry of Tourism, in conjunction with the Mayor's Office of the National District (ADN) and the Ministry of Culture (MINC), this seeks to improve the inventory of homes in the Colonial City, a problem that is more common in the communities of the northern zone.
Promevi also aims to increase the adaptation of homes to disaster risks and the impacts of climate change, by implementing cost-effective resilience measures, energy efficiency, water conservation and the use of less polluting building materials.
It also emphasizes gender equality and diversity, prioritizing women, female heads of household and single mothers, as well as the elderly and people with disabilities, in addition to households where the woman is the main provider.
The aim is to ensure that they are included within the legal instruments that regulate property rights.
Following a public bidding process, the Colonial City Program awarded the operational management to the Dominican Institute for Integral Development, which is responsible for organizing and supporting the participation days of the residents in the area.
Registration process
Residents interested in enrolling in this program can go to the Promevi-IDDI office, located at Santiago Rodríguez Street #1, in San Miguel, Colonial City, from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, request the registration form, fill it out and submit it.
The registration period for the homes opened on November 28th and will close on January 25th, 2024.
Programcomponents
The Promevi consists of four important components: social, whose purpose is the involvement of the population in each phase, the legal, which will facilitate the processes of regularization of tenure and will implement a legal clinic.
Also the technical component, which includes the processes of diagnosis, surveys, design of intervention projects, supervision and quality control during the construction processes of the improvements, as well as the constructive component, which involves the reconditioning of the house.
