SANTO DOMINGO. – Volunteers from Banco Popular Dominicano, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, carried out a work day in the community of Duzón, municipality of Yaguate, where concrete floors were built in five homes and a sports court was renovated, with the participation of around 200 people.
The project was carried out by 95 volunteers from the Popular Volunteer Program, 20 representatives from Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, and 50 community members. It will directly benefit five families, who will receive five renovated homes, and also 825 people in Duzón, who will have a new sports court, thus contributing to improved social cohesion within the community, according to a press release.
Alliance to improve quality of life
Both institutions reported that their partnership began in 2023, and since then the financial organization has been helping to renovate 200 homes, installing new floors and improving their living conditions. They stated that these interventions allow families in vulnerable communities facing housing limitations to live in safer, more dignified, and healthier spaces.
In the context of this collaboration, according to the press release, Popular has allocated US$200,000 to the Habitat for Humanity program “100,000 Floors to Play In”.
This global non-profit organization's initiative focuses on replacing dirt or dilapidated floors with concrete surfaces. This improvement directly contributes to reducing the risk of disease, increasing home safety, and promoting healthier living conditions for the families who benefit from the program.
Social and community impact
Mariel Bera, Vice President of Corporate Relations and Responsible Banking at Grupo Popular, highlighted that these types of initiatives reflect the financial organization's institutional commitment to the human and social development of the country.
“A solid floor may seem like a simple change, but it represents health, safety, and well-being for a family. It means fewer illnesses, greater peace of mind, and a more dignified home. And when a community strengthens its meeting spaces, it also strengthens its hope, its sense of belonging, and its future,” the executive stated.
Meanwhile, Cesarina Fabián, national director of Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, expressed her gratitude to Popular for joining this social cause, highlighting that the alliance demonstrates the value of working together between the community, the private sector and civil society to generate concrete and tangible positive impacts for people.
“Every shovelful of material they load, every wheelbarrow they move, and every hour of their time represents health, stability, and dignity for a family. Because when we replace a floor, we don't just transform a home: we transform the lives of those who live there,” he said.
The volunteers were divided into teams of 15 people who worked on each of the homes being renovated, supported by engineers and technical staff from Habitat for Humanity. Simultaneously, an additional 20 volunteers took charge of preparing the community sports field, located 650 meters from the main activity site, the report concludes.
