Habitat for Humanity invites us to reflect on the meaning of home

Nearly 2.8 billion people around the world struggle for adequate housing.

SANTO DOMINGO – In support of Habitat for Humanity’s global advocacy campaign “Home is Home,” which aims to achieve policy changes to ensure that those living in informal settlements worldwide have equitable access to adequate housing, and within the framework of World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic calls on the population to reflect on the meaning of home and the need for housing in the country.

The organization is calling on the population to raise their voices throughout the month of October to raise awareness about the need for housing for thousands of Dominicans.

The organization made the call through a photographic exhibition on Level 1 of Agora Mall, where it also invited people to share, through one word, what Home means to each of them and thus reflect together, according to a press release.

He adds that, in addition, the organization held a discussion in the atrium of the shopping center where it presented its actions and recent projects in social housing innovation with donors, partners, representatives of the sector, allies, beneficiary families, among others.

“The challenges faced by families in informal settlements will continue to grow. It is our duty to work together with partners, the community, and governments to change and accelerate policies at all levels, in order to guarantee a world where every person has a safe place to call home,” commented Cesarina Fabián, National Director of Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic.

According to a recent UN-Habitat report, an estimated 2.8 billion people worldwide are affected by various forms of inadequate housing; nearly 1.1 billion of them reside in slums and other informal settlements.
