SANTO DOMINGO.- Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic has enabled more than 200 women entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas from their homes, through the "Building Hope Step by Step" project and its "Women Entrepreneurs" program.
This initiative, launched in 2018, has provided microcredit to female heads of household or single mothers living in vulnerable conditions. Through this credit, they have improved the infrastructure of their homes, aiming to transform them into productive households that contribute to generating the necessary income for the sustenance and progress of their children.
During these years of the pandemic, the economic crisis has worsened, which is why Habitat for Humanity believes it is essential that female heads of household not only have safe housing, but also be able to generate income for themselves and their children from their homes. The organization aims to ensure that every female entrepreneur feels supported and can develop her business idea securely, while also reducing the costs associated with renting a commercial space, according to a statement from the organization.
“When I fix up this business, I’ll have security because there won’t be any break-ins, and I won’t lose what I’ve invested. Having extra space will give me the opportunity to be better stocked and get more customers,” says Irene, one of the women in the program
One of the key aspects is providing family financial advice so that women can learn to manage the money they earn through their businesses. “Dominican women have our support. We believe that each one deserves to live in a decent home and have the necessary resources for her family to have greater overall well-being. At Habitat for Humanity, we are making this possible,” stated Cesarina Fabián, National Director of Habitat Dominican Republic.
The initiative guarantees greater stability for women and their families, especially at this time when housing has become the first line of defense, protection and engine of economic recovery.
