SANTO DOMINGO.- In a year still dominated by the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the need to revive the economy, increases in the prices of construction materials and disruptions in supply chains, resilience was the hallmark of the 5,764 housing solutions and more than 28,820 people served by Habitat for Humanity, as well as that of the volunteers, donors, partners and staff of the organization.
Despite the challenges, the non-profit organization focused on building a world where every person has a decent place to live, succeeded in 2021 in providing more Dominicans with new homes, as well as continuing the operation of the organization's programs in order to generate value for families with an emphasis on home repairs and improvements.
With this figure, the Dominican Republic is part of the 1.4 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean who have a safe and healthy place to rest, according to the Habitat for Humanity International Annual Report.
“While the pandemic has brought uncertainty to much of our lives, one thing that has not wavered is Habitat’s commitment to building a better world through safe, dignified, and affordable housing,” said Jonathan TM Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, who also said, “Thank you to the donors and volunteers who put Habitat’s mission into practice every day.”.
The report published on www.habitatdominicana.org shows how the organization helped more than 4.2 million people to build or improve the place they call home through determination and creativity.
Habitat's impact was felt in more than 70 countries around the world, specifically 1.1 million people in the Asia-Pacific region, nearly 1.6 million people in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, more than 1.4 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean; and more than 30,000 people in the US and Canada.
Thanks to this work, today more than 39 million people in the world have a safe home thanks to the efforts of Habitat since its founding in 1976.
Habitat Dominicana, working shoulder to shoulder, managed to rebuild, improve, and create new homes for Dominicans who did not have sufficient economic resources to guarantee a decent and healthy home amidst the current pandemic.
“We want to thank our partners who, thanks to their support and the projects we developed together this year, have helped more Dominicans obtain decent housing. Likewise, we thank our corporate and individual donors who, despite the circumstances, said yes to extending a helping hand to those less fortunate, and each volunteer for their time and dedication, and who willingly put God's love into action by serving,” added Cesarina Fabián, National Director of Habitat Dominicana.
