Government announces it will promote 50 territorial planning plans from 2024-2028

SANTO DOMINGO –The Deputy Minister of Territorial Planning and Regional Development, Domingo Matías, affirmed yesterday, Tuesday, that the new government of President Luis Abinader will continue the territorial planning strategies and their necessary link with the protection of the environment and the policies that counteract the severe effects of climate change.

The sociologist and municipal expert emphasized that the continuation of the sustainable development path associated with environmental strategies in the territories of the new government to be sworn in on August 16 represents a series of challenges that call upon the ministries and state agencies to continue with the necessary actions and policies, details a press release.

Among those challenges, he mentioned the formulation of fifty territorial planning schemes during the next four years of Abinader's administration. He said that this is established in the 2024-2028 Government Program.

“At the Ministry of Economy, of those fifty plans to be formulated, we already have 20 of them well underway. Of course, we will need the collaboration of the different public and private sectors, civil society, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, European Cooperation, and inter-institutional coordination to complete the task entrusted to us by the President of the Republic,” Matías stated.

Meanwhile, the Director of Territorial Planning, Ramón Valdez, reported that the meeting with representatives from the Ministries of Economy and Environment corresponds to a meeting to coordinate regional and municipal territorial planning plans between both ministries.

Furthermore, the meeting served to deepen the environmental strategies in the territories as provided by Law 368-22 on Territorial Planning, Human Settlements and Land Use and Law 16 on Environment and Natural Resources, Valdez said.

In addition to Valdez, several directors from Risk Management and Climate Change, Territorial Planning and Promotion of the Development Councils of the Viotdr participated.

The meeting was attended by the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Indhira de Jesús, and the Director of Municipal Environmental Management, Pedro García Brito.
