SANTO DOMINGO – The Dominican Winter League's Round Robin is entering its decisive stage, with the field beginning to take shape among the top-performing teams. According to official data from the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) as of yesterday, the Leones del Escogido and the Toros del Esteare tied for first place with seven wins and two losses each.
The Águilas Cibaeñas remain in third place with four wins and five losses, still mathematically in contention for a spot in the Final Series. Their recent performance compels them to finish strong to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.
In last place are the Gigantes del Cibao, who remain winless after accumulating nine consecutive losses, leaving them virtually without a chance of advancing. Their performance in this stage has been one of the most difficult for the franchise in recent years.
LIDOM highlighted that the consistency shown by Escogido and Toros has set the pace for this stage, while the Águilas have had an inconsistent performance that keeps them teetering between qualification and elimination. The league indicated that the finalists will be determined by the outcome of the remaining games.
The official schedule states that the Round Robin concludes on January 17, at which time the two teams advancing to the Final Series will be determined. The final is scheduled to begin between January 18 and 19, depending on whether an extra game is needed due to a tie.
The semifinal stage has maintained a competitive level marked by the pressure of each game, especially for the Águilas, who are fighting to stay alive, and for the Gigantes, who are trying to avoid finishing the stage without a win. Meanwhile, Escogido and Toros have managed to maintain a pace that makes them favorites to advance.
Caribbean Series
The 2026 Caribbean Series will be held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, after Venezuela was ruled out as a host country due to security concerns. The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 1st to 7th, according to available reports.
Venezuela will also not participate, and its Round Robin has been suspended since January 3, following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, which caused the paralysis of sporting activities in that country and left the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) without a representative.
With Venezuela absent, the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation adjusted the tournament format, which will be played with representatives from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama and the two teams from Mexico: the champion and runner-up of the ARCO Mexican Pacific League.
