The Dominican airline received its first cargo plane, with a capacity to carry up to 6,600 kilograms, and plans to add a second aircraft
SANTO DOMINGO – Dominican airline Air Century has added its first Bombardier CRJ200SF cargo plane, capable of carrying up to 6,600 kilograms of goods, as part of a plan to enter the air cargo transport market in the Caribbean and other markets in the region, according to information published by the specialized media outlet Aviaciónline.
According to that publication, the aircraft, identified with the registration HI1139, was received at the private flight terminal of La Isabela International Airport, in Santo Domingo, where the company has its main operations center.
Aviaciónline notes that the addition is part of a plan that includes acquiring two cargo planes to offer freight transport services in the region.
Regarding the aircraft's features, the media outlet indicates that it has eight pallet positions, a special door to facilitate loading operations, and a roller system for handling containers, pallets, and loose goods.
The airline is diversifying its operations
According to information published by Aviaciónline, Air Century's entry into this segment is part of a diversification strategy initiated in 2024. The company chose the CRJ200SF model after gaining experience with its passenger version, according to the data released.
In statements collected by that media outlet, Carlos Jiménez, executive vice president of Air Century, stated that the project seeks to facilitate the transfer of goods between markets and expand the region's commercial connections.
“We want to facilitate the movement of goods in the Caribbean and the region, connect new markets and contribute to the goal of making the Dominican Republic the main regional cargo hub,” said Jiménez, quoted by Aviaciónline.
The publication also indicates that the company plans to offer services to international transport companies, establish routes for freight forwarders, and operate on-demand flights. However, the available information does not specify the initial routes or the expected start date for each service.
Freight transport and regional opportunities
The Dominican Republic's geographic location favors its connection to markets in the Caribbean and Central America. However, the extent of these opportunities for Air Century's new operation will depend on factors such as demand, costs, and the availability of connections.
Another element is nearshoring, a model by which companies relocate part of their production processes to countries closer to their main markets. This trend can generate additional demand for logistics services, although its specific impact on the airline's operations is not quantified in the published information.
Aviaciónline places the initiative within the diversification plans of Air Century, a company that, according to the media outlet, has accumulated almost 35 years of operations in the aeronautical sector.
A 21-month process
According to data released by Aviaciónline, the project required 21 months of preparation, from the signing of the letter of intent to the receipt of the first cargo plane.
The report also indicates that the company plans to add a second aircraft. However, the published information does not specify the estimated arrival date of this aircraft or the schedule for the routes that will be put into service.
With the arrival of the CRJ200SF, Air Century is entering a new phase in its operations by adding cargo transport to its services. The success of this service will depend on its launch and the response from the regional market.
