He deplored the lack of public consultation for the modification of that piece of legislation, which will have an economic impact on MSMEs and represents a setback in environmental management.
SANTO DOMINGO- The National Business Support Network for Environmental Protection (ECORED), through its executive director Kathia Mejía, expressed concern about the modification approved by the Senate to Law 225-20 on Comprehensive Management and Co-processing of Solid Waste.
Mejía emphasized that the amendment was approved without due process of public consultation, excluding citizens and key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Sustainable DO Public-Private Trust, which constitutes a violation of the principles of participation, sustainability and governance that underpin the original legislation.
"The reform will seriously affect sustainability and comprehensive waste management, and will have a significant impact on businesses, especially SMEs," he said.
The executive director of ECORED stressed that Law 225-20, enacted in 2020, is the result of a broad consensus between the public and private sectors, emphasizing that before considering changes, it is crucial to implement the pending aspects of the current regulations, as she explained.
Furthermore, they described the reform as a setback to more than a decade of efforts to develop capacities for the management and valorization of solid waste in the country.
