Dominican Republic proposes bi-regional meeting to promote tourism

Confirmation from the African commission is pending; it would take place in October of this year in Punta Cana.

The presidency of the Regional Commission of the Americas of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), currently held by the Dominican Republic, proposed holding a bi-regional meeting between the countries of Africa and America on tourism (CAF-CAM).

The event would be the first of its kind within UN Tourism, and will mark “a milestone”, as it promises to “boost cooperation and development in both regions”, said David Collado, Dominican Ministry of Tourism.

The meeting, scheduled for October 2024 in the Dominican Republic, will have as its central theme the “Promotion of South-South Cooperation in the areas of investment, education, innovation and creative economy”.

This approach seeks to leverage cultural similarities and strengthen historical ties between the two continents, highlighting the rich African heritage present in the Americas, from gastronomy to music and traditions.

Cultural exchange

The Dominican Republic, as host of this meeting, has as its main objective to highlight the influence and contribution of Africa to the culture and development of America.

This initiative is expected to foster exchange and collaboration in various areas, as well as the creation of a shared vision for tourism development in the member countries of both commissions.

The event, scheduled to take place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on October 10 and 11, 2024 (subject to the availability of the African Commission), will include the participation of representatives from both regions, as well as the United Nations Tourism Organization.

The availability of the date has already been confirmed by UN Tourism and the Dominican Republic, while confirmation from the African Commission for the same date is still pending.

The First CAF-CAM Bi-regional Meeting promises to be a unique space for dialogue and collaboration, where opportunities to strengthen tourism and promote sustainable and inclusive development in both regions will be explored.
