Héctor Porcella, president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), reaffirmed the Dominican Republic's commitment to cooperating in the creation of a transit network , serving all air transport users. The official expressed his views during the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation in Chicago (United States).
“December 7, International Civil Aviation Day, celebrates the crucial role of air transport in uniting the world. We are confident that it is an opportunity for us to advocate for the safe and sustainable development of commercial aviation, expanding access to those who need it most,” Porcella stated from the Hilton Chicago Hotel, formerly The Stevens Hotel, the venue where the convention was adopted and the organization was founded.
He stated that today, the Dominican Republic reaffirms its commitment to the national and regional aeronautical sector, just as it did in 1944, when the country was one of the 54 signatory states of the Chicago Conference, to establish the foundations of equal opportunities for the benefit of all nations.
He added that the Luis Abinader administration has been very clear about the priorities the Dominican government wants to achieve in civil aviation , fully supporting the increase in air transport services and reciprocity between states. “For eight decades, this historic agreement laid the foundation for the rules and procedures for global air navigation,” Porcella said.
During the extraordinary session of its governing body, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), convened, on December 4 and 5, 2024, representatives of States, industry, regional organizations, academia, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations to a series of high-level interactive roundtables on the evolution of the sector, the challenges and opportunities facing Civil Aviation, and thus air transport.
The Dominican delegation, comprised of the Permanent Representative to ICAO, Julio Peña Guzmán; Héctor Porcella, President of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC); and Igor Rodríguez Durán, Director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, reflected during the event, together with representatives of States, regional organizations, and non-governmental organizations, on the fundamental role of civil aviation in the Dominican Republic as a bridge builder for greater safe and sustainable of air transport.
