SANTO DOMINGO- After five years since the start of one of the biggest alleged corruption scandals in the country, called by the Public Prosecutor's Office the Anti-Octopus Case, in the early hours of Thursday, August 14, 2025, three judges of the Second Collegiate Court of the National District unanimously sentenced Alexis Medina to seven years in prison, finding the former official and brother of former President Danilo Medina guilty of the crimes of bribery, money laundering and criminal association.
In November 2020, just three months after the current president Luis Abinader assumed his first term, the Public Prosecutor's Office launched Operation Anti-Octopus, a case against several former officials and people close to the previous government, who were accused of administrative corruption.
According to the court ruling, Alexis Medina will serve his sentence in Najayo Men 's Prison and pay a fine of 150 minimum wages. His sister, Magalys Medina , was acquitted .
In Alexis' case, the illegal acts occurred between 2012-2020, a period in which his brother, Danilo Medina, was president of the Republic.
Among the other 19 people linked to the process, some were sentenced, but most were acquitted.
The decision was made by judges Claribel Nivar Arias, president of the court; Yissel Soto and Clara Sobeida Castillo.
The reading of the sentence began minutes before 11 p.m. on Wednesday and concluded at 4:13 a.m. on Thursday.
What the Public Prosecutor's Office
The Public Prosecutor's Office was seeking a 20-year prison sentence and a fine of 400 minimum wages against Alexis Medina , whom they accused of defrauding the State of more than five billion pesos through a corruption network that he implemented by taking advantage of his position of power.
He was seeking a 10-year sentence for his sister, Carmen Magalys Medina . The other sentences he was requesting were 10, 5, and 3 years.

In the case of Víctor Matías Encarnación Montero , who reached an agreement with the Public Prosecutor's Office , a five-year suspended prison sentence and a fine equivalent to 500 minimum wages were requested . His entire sentence was suspended, and he was ordered to pay court costs.
