SANTO DOMINGO.- The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) said yesterday that the project to register real estate and construction providers is a proposal aimed at providing greater protection and control to consumers within the real estate sector in the Dominican Republic.
He explained that the plan will have an advanced technological platform, which will allow any citizen to verify with just one click whether a construction company is properly registered.
In a letter to El Inmobiliario, the entity's executive director, Eddy Alcántara, asserted that this is not the same proposal put forward in 2020, despite the similarities in name. "It's important to clarify that this proposal is unrelated to the project attempted but not implemented in 2020, despite the similarities in name," the official stated.
This media outlet published yesterday, Tuesday, May 6, the existence of a nine-page document entitled “Project for the registration of suppliers in the real estate and construction sector,” posted on the Pro Consumer website, created in 2020, under the supervision of a group of associations, including the organization itself.
"That initiative, besides not being implemented, did not include effective mechanisms for protecting consumer rights," Alcántara stated in the letter.
He stated that his proposal is based on transparency, contractual traceability, and buyer empowerment as its central focus.
He explained that through the registry it will be possible to know if the adhesion contract has been reviewed in accordance with article 81 of the General Law for the Protection of Consumer Rights No. 358-05, as well as to know the history of conflicts with consumers, including possible hidden construction defects or disproportionate increases in the costs of work.
"Furthermore, it will allow access to real-time information on the projects that these real estate companies are developing and their delivery schedules," he added.
He recalled that the project announcement was made from New York City within the framework of the forum “Protecting the Dominican Dream: Preventing Real Estate Scams for the Dominican Community Abroad”.
He specified that he will be convening soon to announce the initiative in detail.
