Construction of San Juan airport is progressing according to schedule

SAN JUAN. – The director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo, assured yesterday that the construction work of the El Granero del Sur Domestic Airport in this province is progressing according to schedule, a project considered vital for the economic development of the entire subregion of the Valley in the Southwest region.

During a supervisory tour, Pichardo confirmed the progress of the work being carried out at the airfield, including the runway, the aircraft parking apron, the taxiway and the runway safety areas, as well as the area where the terminal building and the barracks of the Dominican Republic Air Force will be built.

Likewise, the actions carried out by the Dominican Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDHRI) to provide a solution for the relocation of existing irrigation canals within the airport grounds were verified.

“Progress has been made according to plan. We can see that, in this first stage of the project, work is underway on the cut and fill of the runway, the aircraft parking areas, and the terminal. The work on the perimeter fence is already 100% complete,” explained Pichardo.

He maintained that the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, has clearly established the importance of this airport facility for the comprehensive economic and social development of San Juan and the Southwest region, for all issues related to agriculture, tourism, national security and rescue operations.

For his part, Luis Bonilla, executive director of the San Juan Economic and Social Development Plan, who toured the site with Pichardo, expressed his gratitude for the progress of the airport terminal, noting that the impact of the project will not only be on agriculture, but also on the health sector, due to the possibility of transporting patients in emergency situations.

“This is a very important project for us, as this airport represents 60 percent of what could be the contribution to the development of the province,” he pointed out.
