Conscience before reputation

Here is one of the most powerful phrases I have ever read, and it made me reflect: “Worry more about your conscience than your reputation, because your conscience is who you are and your reputation is what others think of you… and what others think is their problem.”.

And the more years I spend in the real estate market, the more I understand the depth of that expression.

In our industry, there's often a temptation to sell for the sake of selling, to overpromise, to tell the client what they want to hear, or to prioritize image over truth. And that's precisely where the conscience of a developer or real estate advisor makes all the difference.

Because ultimately, a reputation can be built with advertising, social media, or marketing campaigns. But conscience is only built by acting correctly when no one is watching.

I've learned that the real estate business isn't simply a sales business. It's a business of responsibility.

Behind every signature is a family, a financial sacrifice, years of work, and often a lifetime's savings. That's why I've always believed that both developers and real estate agents have a moral obligation to act transparently, even when telling the truth might complicate negotiations.

Sometimes you have to explain risks to a client that could prevent them from buying. Sometimes you have to acknowledge delays, price increases, difficulties, or situations that many prefer to temporarily hide to avoid criticism. But experience has taught me that hidden problems eventually explode, while transparency strengthens trust.

And yes, there will always be opinions. There will be people who speak well and others who criticize without knowing the whole story. That's part of any human and business activity.

But something is worth much more than outside opinions: being able to sleep peacefully.

Because at the end of the day, the greatest asset of a real estate advisor or developer is not only the money they generate, but the peace of mind of knowing that they acted correctly with their clients, their partners, and their word.

Reputation depends on others. Conscience depends on ourselves.
