The Amber Highway, which will connect Santiago with Puerto Plata in three stages, will contribute to strengthening logistics, freight transport, and the tourism and economic development of both provinces
SANTO DOMINGO. The CEO of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Sergio Granados, reiterated the entity's commitment to continue supporting investment projects in the Dominican Republic, including the Amber Highway, which will connect Santiago de los Caballeros with Puerto Plata and whose execution is planned in three stages.
In Madrid, Spain, President Luis Abinader announced last Wednesday, November 4, that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Amber Highway will take place within 15 days , with the first budget allocation delivered by the Government in the amount of RD 5,780 million.
The president provided the information at the start of official activities in the European country with a bilateral meeting with the executive president of CAF, a multilateral financial institution that showed interest in supporting the construction of the project.
Following the meeting, Granados confirmed the financial institution's support for development initiatives taking place within the national territory.
“We are very pleased to have a week that has ended very well, where the Dominican public has been a major part of the summit. We were able to hold this meeting with President Abinader to reaffirm the support of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Dominican Republic, particularly for the projects we have been working on,” he said.
Investment projects and financial cooperation
During his speech, the executive also referred to other initiatives that have the support of multilateral organizations, including the Hatillo aqueduct, a project in which the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and CAF are jointly participating.
Similarly, he highlighted the importance of the Amber Highway, considered a strategic infrastructure to optimize the connection between the provinces of Santiago and Puerto Plata.
In this regard, Granados explained that the construction will be carried out in three phases and assured that the financial institution will contribute financially to its development.
“It’s a road that will have three stages. We’re going to start building it. The president already announced it, as he said, the groundbreaking ceremony. The idea is to support the effort of that construction, and the bank will be providing financial support for the road,” he stated.
Amber Highway will boost logistics and tourism
Furthermore, the head of CAF highlighted the impact this infrastructure will have on freight transport, logistics operations, and the economic growth of the regions involved.
According to their explanations, the road will strengthen land communication between Santiago and Puerto Plata, as well as create new opportunities for commercial and tourist activities in both provinces.
“It will be a redemption for logistics, for cargo, and it will give a great opportunity for economic growth to Santiago de los Caballeros, to tourism, and of course, to Puerto Plata,” he said.
Finally, Granados reiterated the entity's willingness to continue working with Dominican authorities to support infrastructure and development initiatives that promote the country's economic expansion.
