The Dominican Republic has recorded six seismic events in 38 days, including a 4.5 magnitude tremor north of Miches this Wednesday

The events were reported between September 27 and November 4. They included a 5.6 magnitude earthquake near El Seibo, two tremors exceeding 4.0 in San Juan, and a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in the Atlantic Ocean, followed by a 2.4 magnitude aftershock just 13 minutes later

SANTO DOMINGO– A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, 104 kilometers east of Miches, followed by a 2.4 magnitude aftershock just 13 minutes later, once again highlighting the seismic activity in the Dominican Republic. This latest event brings the total number of significant earthquakes in the country and its surrounding areas to six in less than two months, from September 27 to November 4.

Six seismic events, including main tremors and one aftershock, are listed in the two reports on seismic activity recorded in the Dominican Republic between September 27 and November 4, 2026, a period of 38 days during which different points of the national territory and nearby areas experienced tremors of various magnitudes.

The most recent earthquake was a 4.5 magnitude tremor east of Miches

The most recent event occurred on Wednesday, November 4, when a magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook an area of the Atlantic Ocean located 104 kilometers east of Miches. The phenomenon was detected at 12:57 p.m., at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the National Seismological Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

Thirteen minutes later, at 1:10 p.m., a 2.4 magnitude aftershock occurred in the same area, according to seismic data analyst Queiroz Portorreal, who reported receiving reports from people who felt the tremor in different locations.

This episode represents the most recent of the events highlighted in both reports, following a day of seismic activity recorded on Sunday, September 27, when four phenomena were reported in different parts of the country.

Four tremors occurred on the same day in September

The activity was also felt on Sunday, September 27, when four tremors were recorded in an approximate interval of 16 hours, according to reports from the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and the National Seismological Center.

The first was a micro-earthquake of magnitude 1.9, detected around 1:45 a.m., whose epicenter was located about 4.2 kilometers north of Santiago de los Caballeros.

Subsequently, at 6:06 a.m., monitoring stations identified a preliminary magnitude 4.1 earthquake near the municipality of Bohechío, San Juan province, with an estimated depth of 10 kilometers.

Just a minute later, at 6:07, another tremor was detected, whose magnitude was initially calculated between 4.3 and 4.6. Although at first it was located near San Antonio de Guerra and Bayaguana, later reports from the National Seismological Center preliminarily placed its epicenter 11.9 kilometers north-northwest of Bohechío.

This latter phenomenon was perceived in different sectors of Greater Santo Domingo and surrounding localities.

The strongest earthquake was a magnitude 5.6 quake near El Seibo

On the other hand, the largest event among the six highlighted in both reports occurred that same Sunday, September 27, at 5:49:46 in the afternoon, when a 5.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded near the province of El Seibo.

The COE indicated that the epicenter was located approximately 5.6 kilometers southwest of Albizu, at a depth of 108 kilometers, at coordinates 18.64° north and 69.06° west.

Due to its magnitude and depth, the phenomenon was felt in different locations across the country. However, preliminary assessments by emergency agencies did not identify any significant damage.

The shaking caused concern among residents

The series of seismic events caused concern among residents of various communities, some of whom decided to temporarily leave their homes as a precaution.

Similarly, the situation manifested itself in public spaces, including the International Book Fair, where some people temporarily evacuated the premises after feeling the tremors.

In light of these events, the authorities reiterated the importance of remaining calm, heeding the recommendations of official bodies, and refraining from spreading unconfirmed information.

How many seismic events were recorded and during what period?

In that sense, in order to have a greater understanding, by chronologically ordering the events included in both reports, six outstanding phenomena are identified, distributed over two days separated by 38 days.

Date and timeMagnitudeLocation
September 27, 1:45 am.1.9Santiago
September 27, 6:06 am.4.1Bohechío, San Juan
September 27, 6:07 am.4.3-4.6Preliminary location near Bohechío

November 4, 12:57 pm.4.5Atlantic Ocean, east of Miches
November 4, 1:10 pm.2.4Same area east of Miches

Count of the six movements highlighted in the two notes provided; does not represent the total number of events in the national seismic catalog during those 38 days.

In perspective, the timeline shows two periods of greater activity: four tremors in approximately 16 hours during September 27 and another two, with just 13 minutes between them, on November 4.

It should be noted that the magnitudes and locations of some events in September were provided on a preliminary basis and were subject to review by specialized agencies.
