SANTO DOMINGO.-The president of Codia, the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors, is in negotiations with the construction company that caused the collapse in June of last year in part of its structure, due to work that was being carried out in the back of the entity's headquarters.
“Recently, in December, they came to begin the shoring work because a company came and did some studies on the entire building, which is vulnerable due to its age and construction method—a structure made of masonry, not reinforced concrete,” reported Cristian Rojas Mora, president of the College, yesterday.
He explained that the process to reach an agreement with the company is because they do not want to go to court and prefer to negotiate. He reiterated that the company that affected them did not have any permit to carry out the work that caused the collapse and that they will soon sign an agreement to avoid going to court and resolve the problem.
Pensions
Likewise, Codia demanded from the Government a solidarity pension for 291 members and a review of 111 sections of people who receive a very low amount that does not allow them to live with dignity.
Rojas reported that they are members of the professional association who are over 65 years old and the labor market does not employ them.
“We at Codia help many with medicines and small assistance, some for operations; the College is always there for that, but there are many and we cannot meet all the needs with the resources we receive, and we hope to be favored with a good number of pensions, and if it is for the 11th, when we celebrate our 60th anniversary, it would be extraordinary for our members,” he added.
He appealed to the president so that these people could live out their remaining time more peacefully. He indicated that around 50 members of the professional association received pensions in 2014, and since then, they have been requesting pensions for others, but their applications have been denied.
At a press conference, it was also announced that the 60th anniversary of the founding of that entity will be celebrated from the 7th to the 15th of this month with a technical-scientific conference, where guests from Panama, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador and Cuba will participate.
