SANTO DOMINGO.- The president of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA), Enrique Rosario García, stated this Monday that the works built in the country maintain quality standards and pointed out that the main deficiencies in buildings are related to the lack of maintenance.
“The construction work in the Dominican Republic is of good quality. The problems that arise in many cases do not stem from the construction itself, but from the maintenance the structures receive,” Rosario stated during a press conference held yesterday, December 29.
The union representative explained that some companies request process evaluations and certifications from CODIA, although few actually do so. In this context, he urged the government to verify all construction projects before accepting them from contractors, noting that budgets include a percentage allocated for supervision.
“It is necessary that each project be reviewed before its final delivery. The projects include resources for supervision, but these are not always applied appropriately,” he stated.
He also stated that the entity is willing to collaborate with the municipalities and the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED) in the processes of surveying and notifying construction projects.
Rosario clarified that, by law, a registered professional must participate in every engineering project, although they do not have the authority to inspect and halt construction work on their own. “We can act as advisors to the government, but sending inspection teams involves costs that the professional association cannot always afford,” she pointed out.
CODIA Anniversary
The union also announced the schedule of activities for its 63rd anniversary, which will be celebrated from January 4 to 11, 2026.
The program includes the inauguration of the Exhibition and Services Hall (ISES–CODIA), the “CODIA Runs 3K and 5K” race in Mirador Sur Park, a series of lectures at UASD on strategic challenges in engineering and architecture, and a meeting of the Surveying Center with inter-institutional panels and delivery of certificates to new appraisers.
The anniversary week will conclude on Sunday, January 11, with solemn ceremonies, a thanksgiving mass, a parade, a floral offering at the Altar of the Fatherland, the Assembly of Representatives, and the traditional Gala Night, where awards will be presented to outstanding professionals in the sector.
