The new plant will allow the cement company to save water with the aim of achieving the global goal of a 20% savings in cement operations by 2030.
SANTO DOMINGO –With the goal of improving efficiency and reducing water consumption, Cemex Dominicana inaugurated a new process water treatment plant. This milestone aligns strategically with the company's management roadmap, which has already resulted in a reduction of more than 50% in potable water consumption locally, contributing to the multinational's global objective of reducing its water use in cement operations by 20% by 2030.
The new plant will distribute water for the clinker production processes of production line No. 1, the three cement mills and the raw flour mill of the cement plant, thus optimizing the use of the liquid in its operations, conserving water resources and promoting responsible industrial practices, a press release highlights.
It highlights that the innovative project demonstrates the multinational's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, being part of the Future in Action strategy, specifically its fourth pillar, "Water and Biodiversity," in which they prioritize the preservation of this natural resource, recognizing it as the most precious to humanity and striving to carry out business activities in a responsible and sustainable manner, minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing value for society.
“Water is humanity’s most precious resource, and we are committed to its preservation. While it is a vital component in our cement and ready-mix concrete production, as well as in the cleaning of plants, trucks, and equipment, our strategy is to minimize our water needs, install water recycling systems, and replace our potable water consumption—which competes with human and agricultural water use—with alternative sources. The plant we are inaugurating today decisively addresses the first point, and at a crucial time when we all must contribute due to the growing water stress the country is experiencing,” stated José Antonio Cabrera, General Director of Cemex Caribbean Cluster (Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico).
The press release highlights that the water project will bring benefits such as improved leak control, since its new pipes are above ground, allowing for faster identification and correction of any problems. In turn, water consumption is made more efficient, as the water passes through a recirculation system, similar to the one installed on production line No. 2 in 2007.
He adds that the first phase focuses on reducing consumption, and that the next step is to replace the type of water used with non-potable water, not only for cement operations but also for the concrete business. "Likewise, Cemex can offer construction solutions to meet the new needs for improving water infrastructure," he explains.
