The agreement signed with the Official Credit Institute (ICO) will support projects in sectors such as tourism, energy, construction and innovation, as well as strengthen economic relations between both countries.
SANTO DOMINGO.– Dominican and Spanish companies with operations or commercial relations between both countries will have access to a new line of financing of up to US$50 million, following an agreement reached between Banco Popular Dominicano and the Official Credit Institute (ICO) of Spain.
The initiative seeks to facilitate resources for investment projects in strategic areas of the Dominican economy, while strengthening business and trade ties between the Dominican Republic and Spain, one of the country's main European partners.
According to Banco Popular, this is the third financing agreement reached with the ICO, a public financial institution under the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business. With this new facility, the total amount channeled through this partnership reaches US$150 million.
Financing for strategic sectors
The resources will be directed to companies that maintain economic relations with Spain and develop projects in sectors such as tourism, energy, construction, real estate development, hospitality and initiatives linked to innovation, digital transformation and sustainability.
Access to long-term financing is a major challenge for many companies seeking to expand operations, make new investments, or develop larger-scale projects. In this regard, the agreement aims to broaden credit options for productive activities with the potential to generate jobs and stimulate the economy.
Spain, one of the main investors
The operation also comes in the context of a close economic relationship between the Dominican Republic and Spain, the bank explained.
Spanish companies maintain a significant presence in sectors such as tourism, banking, energy, infrastructure and services, while trade and investment flows between the two nations have continued to strengthen in recent years.
According to the financial institution, the resources will be channeled through the ICO International Channel Line, a program designed to support business projects outside of Spain that maintain economic links with Spanish companies.
Growth in business financing
Banco Popular indicated that its loan portfolio destined for the business sector reached RD$395,024 million at the close of March 2026, according to data from the Banking Market Information System (SIMBAD) of the Superintendency of Banks.
Of that total, RD$178,285 million corresponds to financing granted to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), a segment that represents an important part of the productive activity and job creation in the country.
With this new agreement, the entity seeks to expand the sources of financing available for productive projects and continue strengthening the support mechanisms for companies with potential for growth and international expansion.
