SANTO DOMINGO. – Located at about 1,220 meters above sea level, 135 kilometers from Santo Domingo and after a winding ascent, rises one of the most moving sanctuaries of Dominican popular spirituality: the Monument to the Divine Child, in Constanza.
It is not just a monumental sculpture, 26 feet tall, a concrete and steel structure clad in white and pink marble; this place is the testament to a promise fulfilled, a miraculous healing, and a devotion that draws pilgrims from all corners of the country and beyond.
The short story
The work was planned and developed by Manuel Antonio Camilo, who, after overcoming two bouts of cancer, attributed his healing to a spiritual revelation linked to the Divine Child. In honor of that experience, he decided to build the monument as an offering of faith and commissioned the design from the sculptor Ramón Osorio.
Antonio Camilo was not a sculptor, nor an architect, nor even a practicing religious man. He was a businessman, a farmer, and a true son of Constance, who wanted to leave a testament of faith as a spiritual offering for the miracle he received.
The monument, erected on a 22.44-foot pedestal, weighs about 12 tons, was inaugurated in 2012 and from the top of the hill it watches over the pilgrims' path, making itself visible from all angles of the valley.
Camilo and his wife are the guardians of the place, as silent hosts of a devotion that, from Constanza, has touched thousands of lives, as the sanctuary quickly became a pilgrimage site.
Lights, silence, prayer
The pilgrims who arrive there are driven by gratitude, hope, or contemplation. Some climb in silence, carrying candles, flowers, and rosaries; others pray before the interior mural that recounts Camilo's revelatory dream.
At the summit, the silence is breathtaking, broken only by whispers and choruses of prayer. Even amidst the rush of Instagram photos, the peace is palpable, savorable, and deeply enjoyed. On special occasions, such as July 20th, the Feast of the Divine Child, open-air masses and community gatherings are held in an atmosphere of respect and contemplation, but also of shared joy among strangers who find common ground in faith.

And if they don't bring candles, there's a small shop that offers them, as well as other devotional items for those who need them; they also have souvenirs.
Lodging
Visitors to this sanctuary will find, right next to the monument, at the very top, La Posada Divina, which offers simple and cozy rooms, with views of the valley and direct access to the sanctuary.
It doesn't appear on traditional booking platforms, as it functions more as a spiritual retreat than a tourist hotel. Many visitors contact it directly or arrive through recommendations from parishes, religious groups, or testimonials from those who have had a transformative experience there.
