X National Population and Housing Census 2022: More than half of Dominican homes have concrete floors

SANTO DOMINGO.– The National Statistics Office (ONE) presented this Thursday the general report of the X National Population and Housing Census 2022 (XCNPV), which reveals that more than half (50.9%) of Dominican homes have concrete floors, while ceramics are present in 34.1% of homes.

This census, which included the participation of approximately 35,000 people throughout the national territory, indicates that block or concrete is the main material used for walls (85.4%), followed by wood (13%). 

Concrete roofs are the most common (48.9%), while zinc roofs represent (47.5%).

In rural areas, 75.2% of homes have zinc as the predominant roofing material, and in 48.4% of homes, the predominant floor material is cement.

Access to Water: Census data underscores the importance of improving access to safe drinking water, particularly in rural areas. While 62.7% of urban households have access to piped water inside their homes, this figure drops to 44.0% in rural areas.

Public water taps serve 5.0% of urban homes and 13.7% of rural homes.

53.0% of households in the country receive water for domestic use from the aqueduct, inside their homes. However, in households of very low socioeconomic status, the percentage decreases to 7.5%.

In 44.6% of households that receive water service at least one day a week, the service for domestic use is received 2 to 3 days a week.

30.4% of households receive less than 5 hours of drinking water service per week, when they receive it at all; in the Enriquillo region this percentage rises to 51.5%

Health service

82.4% have a private toilet sanitary facility in the home.

Households in the provinces of Elías Piña and Monte Cristi have the lowest percentage of households with private toilet service (39.7% and 52.2% respectively).

37.7% of households in the very low socioeconomic group have a private toilet sanitary service in the home.

Electric service

98.1% of households in the Dominican Republic use electricity from the public grid and they receive the service for an average of 21.4 hours per day.

Nationwide, 79.2% of households receive between 20 and 24 hours of electricity per day. Households in the El Valle region receive the highest average number of hours of electricity per day, 23.0 hours, according to ONE data.

The average number of hours per day that households in urban areas receive electricity service is 21.4 hours, and those in rural areas receive 21.5 hours.

Households in the high socioeconomic group are the ones that receive the most hours of electricity on average per day, 22.5 hours.

Economic features

64.8% of the population aged 10 and over belongs to the economically active population, of which 56.0% is male, while 44.0% is female.
