SANTO DOMINGO – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on April 20, triggering tsunami warnings in several prefectures, including Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, raising the risk level in coastal areas.
According to reports from media outlets such as NHK World and The Japan Times, authorities issued evacuation orders almost immediately, urging residents to move to higher ground in anticipation of abnormal swells.
Evacuations and suspension of services
According to reports from international news agencies such as Reuters and AFP, more than 100,000 people were evacuated as a precaution in various locations. The response included the partial suspension of the Shinkansen bullet train service, as well as the shutdown of other critical infrastructure as a safety measure.
The recorded waves reached nearly one meter in some areas, with no major damage reported so far. However, authorities remained vigilant for possible changes in sea conditions.

International media outlets such as El País and Cadena SER reported that some tsunami alerts were subsequently withdrawn, although precautionary measures remain in place in the affected areas.
