SANTO DOMINGO.– Every August 14th, Engineer's Day is celebrated in the Dominican Republic, a profession that, throughout history, has become one of the fundamental pillars for the development of the nation, due to its important contributions in terms of works, constructions and infrastructure that help to beautify, develop and modernize cities.
Engineers are recognized for their valuable contributions in areas such as construction, energy, information technology, telecommunications, and environmental protection. Through their knowledge and skills, they foster the growth and progress of these sectors.

The word engineer comes from the Latin word ingenium, formed from in (in) and genium (related to gen), associated with the idea of begetting or creating. There are different interpretations that relate the term "engineer" to the concept of generating or producing.
One comparison is between an engineer's work and that of a parent raising children: similarly, engineering professionals design, develop, and implement products, systems, and solutions. The Latin term * ingenium* gave rise to words like *engin* in French and * engine* in English, related to machines, motors, and mechanisms.
Subsequently, these terms gave rise to engignneur in French and engineer in English, used to refer to the person in charge of designing, developing or operating machines and systems.
