SANTO DOMINGO.- When the plane stopped on the runway, it was covered by an arch of water from two fire trucks from the Pedernales Fire Department, honoring the traditional greeting given to aircraft as a gesture of welcome to visitors and a blessing of the new flight.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the community of Cabo Rojo in Pedernales received the first domestic flight, formally beginning operations of the new air route from the La Isabela Dr. Joaquín Balaguer International Airport in El Higüero to the Cabo Rojo airfield in Pedernales.
The plane, a BAe Jetstream 32 aircraft from the Air Century airline with a capacity for 19 passengers, left Higüero at 9:38 AM and landed in Cabo Rojo at 10:13 AM, to the applause of the local authorities present and representatives of the media who were covering the events of this first domestic flight to this location.
This first trip was led by the executive director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), Sigmund Freund; the executive director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo; representing the Dominican Air Force, the Inspector General, General Rafael Acosta Cena; the CEO of Rep-Air, Danilo Rosario, and its administrative director, Carlos Jiménez. Also present were representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Pro-Pedernales Trust.

Among the invited personalities were Roberto Cavada, from RC Noticias and Telesistema 11; Julia Muñiz from El Nuevo Diario; Beatriz Bienzobas, editor of Revista de Diario Libre; Bartolo Pérez, professor and contributor to Acento Digital; Carlos Julio Feliz and the influencers in the tourism area Salvador Batista, Paloma de la Cruz, Carlos Torres and Joel Anico.
The guests were received at the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales airfield by local authorities headed by Governor Altagracia Brea, the mayor of the province, Andrés Jiménez, among other authorities.
As part of the inaugural flight program, guests toured the beach and pier of Cabo Rojo, the land where the hotels operated by the six hotel chains will be built, and enjoyed a boat trip to Bahía de las Águilas.
Flight details
The new La Isabela-Cabo Rojo air route will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, departing from La Isabela International Airport at 9:00 am and arriving at Cabo Rojo Domestic Airport at 9:35 am. There will also be a return flight departing Cabo Rojo at 10:15 am and arriving in La Isabela at 10:50 am.
Free baggage allowance: one checked bag in the hold 62” high and a maximum weight of 33 pounds/15 kilos and one carry-on bag in the main cabin 22” x 14” x9” with a maximum of 17 pounds/8 kilos.
