This is the proposal to build the new Fishermen's Village in Las Terrenas

LAS TERRENAS, SAMANÁ- Giving priority to pedestrian and vehicular movement in the area, generating a public-urban space that expresses a concept of identity of its own in each of the premises, streets and houses, this is the proposal to erect the new Pueblo de los Pescadores, the symbol of this tourist center, destroyed by a devastating fire last year.

Tourism Minister David Collado presented the design and plans for the new project to this northeastern community last week. This presentation was the second public hearing led by the minister to seek consensus on the construction, according to a press release.

He expressed gratitude for the donation of the project design by architect Carlos Aguilar, from the international firm VGA, which, given the approval of the community members and the mayors, will be built by the Infrastructure Committee in Tourist Zones (Ceiztur).

Collado announced that they will hold the bidding process to rebuild the Fishermen's Village, but with an agreement with the users, with the community, and forming a board for the care and proper use, maintenance, cleaning and security measures in the environment.

“We will return to the municipality of Las Terrenas the historical symbol of Los Pescadores with its own characteristics, but with a touch of modernity, because the residents of Samaná and the tourists who visit it deserve that and much more,” the official highlighted.

In the middle of the public hearing, President Luis Abinader called Collado and told him that he has been looking for a permanent solution, not a short-term one, for the benefit of the residents of Las Terrenas.

"We are now going to achieve a permanent solution, with a design that not only restores the special characteristics that the Fishermen's Village had, but also provides greater protection in all aspects," the president said over the phone.

Design

Architect Aguilar explained the design characteristics of what will be the Fishermen's Village, prioritizing pedestrian and vehicular movement in the area, generating a public-urban space that expresses a concept of its own identity in each of the premises, streets and houses in the project.

According to Aguilar, a roadway with an "iconic and identifiable pavement" would be built upon arrival at the town, reducing vehicular traffic and offering views of the entire beach.

The meeting, held in the amphitheater of the Puerto Plaza “El Barco” in that tourist town, was attended by the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores), Rafael Blanco Tejera; the senator for the province, Pedro Catrain; the governor, Teodora Mulli; the mayor of Las Terrenas, Eduardo Esteban, among other authorities.

The fire

A devastating fire destroyed all the restaurants and bars in the Pueblo de Pescadores tourist area last September. This area, located on the beach, offered a diverse culinary scene and had become one of the main attractions for visitors.
