It's in its final stages of ground testing and will soon take off on its maiden flight. That's the current status of the supersonic aircraft from Boom Supersonic, which promises to shorten long transoceanic journeys, such as from New York to London—which takes eight hours on board a normal flight—to just three and a half hours, according to projections for the new aircraft.
This aircraft—named Overture—is expected to be the fastest in the world. After seven years in development, and according to an interview with founder and CEO Blake Scholl, it could complete its long-awaited first flight by the end of 2023.
“I believe in a future where more people will go to more places. Think about crossing the Atlantic in under four hours, leaving the East Coast in the morning and arriving for dinner in Europe the same day. Think about being able to make a round trip to Asia in 24 hours,” said the CEO of Boom Supersonic.
What is the fastest plane in the world like?
The first flight was supposed to take place several years ago; however, Scholl assured that the delays were due to improvements in the engine and landing gear, as well as the need to ensure that they are safe for human use and do not pollute in large quantities.
Supersonic flights were banned for many years because of the noise they generate while flying, as they have the ability to make windows vibrate, activate car alarms and even cause damage to the environment.
Regarding its features, the Overture boasts a carbon fiber design to optimize aerodynamics and performance at supersonic speeds. It can carry 60 to 80 passengers and has a range of 7,867 kilometers on a full charge.
It is powered by four engines, two located under each wing.
The closest news to the Overture's flight comes from the company's experimental prototype—called the XB-1—which could be tested later this year: taxiing will be analyzed, and its speed on the runway will be gradually increased. With all these tests, the Overture aircraft can be prepared for its first flight in 2029.
The company stated that they have already planned more than 600 routes for Overture worldwide.
