SANTO DOMINGO.– The process for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Puerto Plata Cable Car took another step forward this Tuesday with the opening of the bids submitted in the international public tender for the design, manufacture, supply, construction, assembly and commissioning of the new cable transport system, reported the Ministry of the Presidency (Minpre).
The opening was carried out jointly with the Executive Unit for the Readjustment of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE), the entity responsible for the process, corresponding to the tender identified as URBE-CCC-LPI-2026-0001.
During the event, two proposals were received: one submitted by a consortium led by the company Doppelmayr and another by Bartholet, both companies specializing in cable transport systems.
Project exceeds US$20 million
According to the Ministry of the Presidency, the rehabilitation of the cable car will have an investment of more than US$20 million, financed by the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC).
The intervention represents the most important modernization of this infrastructure since its inauguration in 1975 and includes the complete replacement of the electromechanical system, as well as the renovation of the stations and other operational components.
Greater capacity and shorter waiting time
According to the project specifications, the new system will increase transport capacity from 18 to 50 passengers per cabin, tripling the cable car's operational capacity and reducing waiting times for residents and visitors.
In addition, the journey between stations will be reduced from approximately eight to five minutes, thanks to an operating speed of up to 10 meters per second and the incorporation of state-of-the-art technology.
Modernization under international standards
The Ministry of the Presidency indicated that the rehabilitation also includes adapting the system to international safety standards applicable to this type of infrastructure, including compliance with the European UNE-EN for cable cars.
The works also include the remodeling of the stations with universal accessibility criteria and the preservation of the architectural elements that are part of the historical identity of the tourist attraction.
The institution reported that, once the contract is awarded, the project will have an estimated execution period of 18 months.
