Digesett implements new contraflow lane on the Malecón to reduce traffic congestion during peak hours

The implementation is part of a set of solutions aimed at optimizing vehicular traffic in the main corridors of Greater Santo Domingo

SANTO DOMINGO.- The General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett) has implemented a new contraflow lane on George Washington Avenue, Malecón, as part of measures aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing travel times in Greater Santo Domingo.

According to the Presidency, the measure will be in effect during the afternoon hours, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and will cover the section between the Obelisco Macho and the Floating Bridge, in a west-east direction, with the aim of facilitating transit during the hours of greatest vehicular congestion.

The Digesett reported that the operation will be supervised by traffic officers in charge of regulating traffic and guiding drivers to ensure a safe and orderly journey.

What is a counterflow?

The term "contraflow" refers to the temporary modification of the usual direction of traffic on a road to facilitate vehicular movement during times of high demand.

According to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE), a contraflow lane is a "change in the direction of some main roads to improve traffic flow at certain times." This strategy is used in various countries to manage urban mobility and reduce congestion levels on high-traffic corridors.

In practice, a contraflow allows additional lanes to be enabled in the direction where the greatest volume of vehicles is concentrated, temporarily increasing the traffic capacity of a road.

The measure aims to reduce travel times

According to Digesett, the implementation of the contraflow on the Malecón is part of a set of solutions aimed at optimizing vehicular traffic in the main corridors of Greater Santo Domingo.

The entity indicated that the measure seeks to reduce travel times for thousands of drivers who use this coastal road daily, considered one of the main connecting axes between the National District and Santo Domingo East.

He also urged drivers to respect the temporary signage and the instructions of the personnel deployed during the execution of the operation.
