The mountain landscape is unremarkable, with nothing to suggest it holds a jewel, yet it holds a stone that might just be one
SANTO DOMINGO. – The first clue to larimar appeared in the sea, in the form of blue beads like pieces of sky that the Caribbean and Barahona waves battered, rounded and polished capriciously according to the mood of María la O., whose story will be told at another time.
It was never a mining exploration but a fortuitous event as far back as 1916 and the failed attempt of the priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, who reported on some bluish stones and tried to obtain authorization to explore them, without success.
Then, in 1974, Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling were walking along Bahoruco Beach, right where the river of the same name flowed into the sea, when they noticed the small blue stones. They followed the river upstream and, in the area known as Los Chupaderos or Los Checheses, they found the deposit, deep in the Bahoruco mountain range, near Las Filipinas, containing the only mine of its kind on the planet. But they didn't know it yet.
Although its scientific name is pectolite, it will always be Larimar, the combination of "Larissa and sea," according to the story told at the Larimar Museum, on the larimarminer.com website, and in the archive that stores the publications of the national press.
That mine is reached by heading inland, away from the sea, up the mountain. The road leaves Barahona, and little by little, the landscape sheds the heat and bustle of the city, and the road is accompanied by that endless blue to the left and the verdant landscape that sometimes kisses it from the right. The destination lies toward the Sierra de Bahoruco, climbing through La Ciénaga.
The chemical formula is NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH), and it says: sodium and calcium silicate, named by mineralogy as pectolite and although it is found in many parts of the planet, the blue variety, thanks to copper, is the one that comes from the bowels of Barahona.
The word that best explains its uniqueness is "unique." And why isn't it a "precious stone" if it's extraordinarily rare? Because being precious has nothing to do with beauty, but rather with a commercial and historical category that has been limited to a club of four gems: diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald, which do possess the hardness that gives them their value.
There is a scale, the Mohs scale, which serves, in a very simple way, to measure how resistant a mineral is to being scratched. Talc is at the bottom, with 1; diamond is at the top, with 10. Larimar usually falls between 4.5 and 5. This means that it is not a particularly hard stone: it can be scratched relatively easily by harder materials and requires more care than a sapphire, a ruby, or a diamond.
To put it simply: larimar is beautiful, rare and unique, but it is not a "very hard" stone and therefore does not have the same practical characteristics as the gems that dominate the high jewelry market, although it looks just as good as the others.
There's another word: cleavage, which refers to the way a stone tends to split, depending on its internal structure. With larimar, this "vein" makes many pieces appear as fibers or lines radiating from a single point, like a fan, and is part of its internal structure.
The thing is, although it's not in the "perfect" club, larimar is a much rarer stone than those favored by the market.
It's a paradox: it's a stone that exists in practically only one place on the planet, yet it can leave that place in its raw state, without having yet received the added value of cutting, design, jewelry, and branding. The mountain possesses the rarity, and the market decides its value.
From the beach to the mountains
The mineralogical record places the Larimar mine complex in the Philippines a few kilometers from Barahona, near La Ciénaga, Paraíso and Polo, although it is not advisable to imagine the mine as a conventional tourist attraction.
It is an active mining area, with shafts and tunnels. Access conditions may vary, and any visit must be authorized and accompanied by people familiar with the area.
But this detail, far from detracting from the charm of the journey, makes it more real because before reaching the display case, one must reach the mountain. And the mountain does not yield larimar clean, polished, and shiny.
He hands over a dirty rock, and behind each piece of solid sky is the product of a chain of work that includes searching for the vein, extracting the material, separating it, taking it to the workshop, and choosing which part can become a piece of jewelry.
From geology to economics

Artisans and representatives of the sector have denounced that foreign buyers are acquiring large volumes of raw larimar. (External source).
Larimar exports have once again sparked debate recently, particularly regarding sales to Asian markets, including China. In 2025, the Ministry of Energy and Mines reported that between January and June, no-objection certificates had been issued for the export of 177,540 pounds of larimar, with a reported value of approximately $15 million , to several destination countries, including China.
In July 2026, the Ministry defended the export policy and said that around 60% of production remains in the country, while 40% is exported, and reported 188,696 pounds produced during the first half of 2026.
But in Bahoruco there is another concern: artisans and representatives of the sector have denounced that foreign buyers acquire large volumes of raw larimar and that they have difficulty competing for that raw material.
The discussion isn't simply "China buys larimar." The more interesting question is: what is larimar worth before it leaves Barahona, and what can it be worth after being cut, polished, designed, and transformed into a piece of jewelry?
A pound of rough stone is one thing, a selected and cut stone is another. A finished piece of jewelry is yet another, and each step adds value.
Barahona has the mountains, the stone, the miners, and the artisans. The commercial battle largely revolves around how much of that value stays in the territory that possesses something no other place in the world can offer.
In 2025, “Larimar Barahona” obtained international registration as a Protected Designation of Origin under the Lisbon Agreement, with protection in 28 countries. The intention is that the geographical name not be a mere embellishment, but a way to protect the identity and value of the product.
Because larimar isn't just blue, it's Barahona blue, and that difference can end up being economically important.
Back to the sea and the city
Back in Barahona, the city reappears as a pause between the mountains and the sea.
Here you can stay overnight and plan your trip to Bahoruco. There are hotels and accommodations both in town and along the road to Paraíso, as well as restaurants where you can stop before or after your ascent.
But after seeing where larimar comes from, Barahona is viewed differently: the stone ceases to seem like a tourist craft.
It's a chain: the mountain gives it to the miner. The miner gives it to the buyer. The buyer can send it abroad. The artisan tries to obtain it: he cuts it, polishes it, turns it into a jewel, and someone, somewhere in the world, ends up wearing around their neck or on their hand a stone that began its journey in those Barahona mountains.
Now there's even an effort to ensure that the name of its origin travels with it, and perhaps that's the best way to understand larimar. It doesn't need anyone to invent a story for it because it already has one.
But the most interesting journey is still the first one, the one that goes from the sea to the mountain.
Because therein lies the surprise: he climbs up looking for a stone that bears the name of the sea and a girl, and discovers that the sea is not inside it.
He is down below, waiting, while up above, under the mountain, the miners continue searching for pieces of blue sky.
