SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed) reported that, in a continuous effort to improve safety and compliance with regulations in the construction industry, it has intensified its preventive and proactive actions since the beginning of 2023 in order to guarantee the protection and well-being of citizens, as well as promote safe and regulated construction practices throughout the country.
He recalled launching an awareness campaign aimed at builders, informing them of the requirement to obtain authorization before carrying out any work prior to the regular commencement of construction. He explained that this measure is based on the General Building Regulations and Plan Treatments (R-021), which establishes the legal basis for requesting such authorizations.
Through this campaign, the organization said it seeks to ensure that all actors involved in construction are fully aware of their responsibilities and current regulations.
Penalties for non-compliance
Since the start of the campaign, numerous illegal excavations and construction projects have been penalized for failing to meet established safety standards. To date, the Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Housing (MIVHED) has identified and penalized several projects that have not complied with regulations, demonstrating a significant impact on improving safety and regulatory compliance in the sector.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to continue monitoring construction and preliminary work nationwide, after warning that inspections and sanctions against those who violate laws and regulations will continue to be a priority for the institution.
“This approach not only seeks to maintain high safety standards in the construction industry, but also to preserve the lives and well-being of Dominicans,” he said in a press release.
He stated that rigorous oversight will continue to ensure that all construction is carried out in accordance with current regulations, thus avoiding any potential risk to citizens.
Expansion plans
In the statement, the institution announced plans to expand its awareness and oversight efforts. It anticipates implementing new technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of inspections, as well as providing ongoing training for its staff to stay current with best practices and advancements in the construction industry.
Furthermore, the aim is to strengthen collaboration with other institutions and organizations to ensure effective coordination in the regulation of the sector.
