SANTIAGO.– The president of the Santiago Association of Merchants and Industrialists (Acis), Sandy Filpo, reported that the Government will invest 2.2 billion pesos in the renovation of the Historic Center, the construction of more than two thousand homes that will benefit families residing in vulnerable areas of this city.
A strategic plan to clean up the Yaque del Norte and Gurabo rivers in Santiago was also announced. Filpo expressed his gratitude that the projects are being awarded to local companies to ensure the needs of each program are met.
Regarding the Historic Center, RD$1.1 billion will be allocated to make it more attractive. This includes widening sidewalks, burying power lines, and renovating the area from Avenida Presidente Antonio Guzmán Fernández to Calle General Luperón. An additional RD$80 million will be invested in other infrastructure projects, specifically for the repair of the Cultural Center and the remodeling of the Benito Monción Boulevard.
According to the business leader, 1.1 billion pesos will be allocated to clean up the Gurabo ravine and the Yaque del Norte River. He also announced a project to provide safe and dignified housing for people living in vulnerable areas.
Hotel
Mercedes, located on 30 de Marzo Street in Santiago, is a landmark and a source of inspiration for poets. This historic building has been abandoned for many years and is now a crumbling ruin. According to the president of ACIS, with the support of the central government, the hotel will be rescued and renovated to restore the splendor of the Historic Center of the Dominican Republic's second largest city and the largest in the North (Cibao region).
More Investments
On September 29, 2021, President Luis Abinader, after breaking ground on the project, announced that over 42 billion pesos would be invested in Santiago for road infrastructure, housing solutions, and other projects. The plans include the construction of a cable car, a monorail, an improved bus network, and initiatives to promote bicycle use.
The president recently inspected the construction of the cable car here, a cable transport system that will have a capacity of 4,500 passengers per hour.
