SANTO DOMINGO.-Building new roads and widening lanes on others located at key points is what the government plans to do to help decongest the chaotic vehicular traffic of Greater Santo Domingo.
Yesterday, President Luis Abinader said on the program "La Semanal con la Prensa" that the construction of the road along Avenida de Colombia, a congested avenue whose real estate development in recent years has caused a collapse in vehicular traffic, is already underway with funds from the company Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom).
He explained that this route will allow entry to Santo Domingo Norte via Jacobo Majluta Avenue, which he described as one of the worst areas in terms of traffic.
"We also have the free route that would pass through Plaza de la Bandera and through where they say Pintura, which is another of the serious points in the country," he added.
He also said that with Aerodom's funds, Máximo Gómez Avenue and the Francisco Peynado Bridge will be expanded from four lanesto six lanes, to improve traffic flow towards Santo Domingo Norte.
He recalled that they have done important works in Santo Domingo East, such as the Hípica Avenue and the extension of the roads on the San Isidro highway.
"In other words, we are improving the road infrastructure. We are doing the same on the Los Alcarrizos bypass and at Kilometer 9, which will be widened to 14 lanes to alleviate traffic," he said.
The president emphasized, however, that the solution to traffic in cities the size of Santo Domingo is mass transit, and that is why they extended the Metro to Los Alcarrizos and built the cablecar.
Santo Domingo West cable car project to be put out to tender
"We are incorporating all these plans into our multi-year budget, and we said that in the first quarter of 2024 we will put the cable car project out to tender, and we said that two of these projects will begin in the second quarter of this year... I believe the last one is the train project to San Cristóbal. We are taking the necessary steps, but it requires a lot of resources," he concluded.
List works
Abinader said, during the Weekly Press Conference, that during this administration, the Ministry of Public Works alone delivered more than 300 projects worth more than RD$71 billion, while the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Mived) delivered more than 7,180 homes that have benefited more than 28,000 Dominicans.
At the same time, the head of state stated that Public Works intervened in more than 18,000 lane-kilometers and that it built, rebuilt and repaired 70 bridges.
Among the works delivered and listed by the president are: bridges, agroforestry roads, paved roads, curbs, sidewalks, CAIPI centers, delivered and repaired housing, hospitals, diagnostic and primary care centers.
Also included are museums, technology centers, regional university centers of the UASD, environmentally friendly housing, cruise terminals, sports facilities, aqueduct systems and reservoirs, as well as irrigation canals and drainage systems that have been improved.
Other Public Works constructions included the improvement of 694 km of agroforestry roads, the laying of 22 million square meters of asphalt, equivalent to 2,825 km of railway lanes, as well as the construction of 2,040 km of curbs and about 1,702 km of sidewalks.

Regarding the My Housing Plan (Mived), more than 7,180 new homes were delivered, benefiting over 28,000 Dominicans. Likewise, under the Dominican Republic Rebuilds Plan, 45,000 homes have been repaired, reaching more than 181,000 Dominicans, while Invivienda SDE renovated 400 buildings and more than 9,000 parking spaces.
In the cultural sphere, five emblematic museums were renovated, including the National Pantheon, the Alcázar de Colón, the Convent of the Dominicans, the Ozama Fortress and the Royal Shipyards Museum, along with the delivery of three technology centers in Los Llanos, Bayaguana and Yuma, promoting access to culture and technology in all regions of the country.
