The Electromobility pilot plan will connect that area with the rest of Greater Santo Domingo via Metro Line 1, using 30 stops.
SANTO DOMINGO.– The Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program of the Colonial City reported that two initiatives are the focus of current intervention: the Housing Improvement Program (Promevi) and the Electromobility Pilot Plan, both coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism.
Promevi reports that of the 38 homes included in the first batch, 24 have already been delivered. The goal is to repair 140 houses in the historic center, with the aim of retaining the resident population and improving their living conditions.
The communities benefiting from this program are San Antón, Santa Bárbara, San Miguel, San Lázaro, and the southern zone. These are areas with dilapidated housing and low-income families.
The press release stated that the works include the reconstruction of bathrooms and kitchens, roof repairs, leak corrections, and the renovation of electrical and plumbing systems. Energy efficiency and water conservation measures are also being implemented, in accordance with EDGE environmental certification. Rainwater harvesting systems are planned for some areas.
The Promevi investment totals $5.2 million, of which $3.2 million comes from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and $2 million from a European Union donation. The project is being implemented in four phases, with new phases planned for 2026.
In parallel, the Electromobility Pilot Plan will incorporate five electric buses into a 12.47-kilometer route with 30 stops. The route will connect the Colonial City with the Plaza de la Cultura and with Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro.
The vehicles have a capacity for 22 passengers, wheelchair space, and priority seating. The route will connect with parking facilities such as La Atarazana and Plaza Zona Colonial.
The project aims to reduce polluting emissions, improve air quality, and decrease noise pollution. It is presented as a sustainable urban transportation alternative.
The operation will be managed by OMSA and the regulation will be the responsibility of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT).
One notable aspect is the participation of women in bus driving. 100% of the drivers hired are women, trained in eco-friendly driving techniques.
Both projects are part of a set of 28 initiatives that make up the Colonial City Revitalization Program.
The intervention combines urban, social and cultural actions, with the purpose of consolidating the historic center as a habitable and functional space.
