SANTO DOMINGO.-The number of people with access to formal credit continues to increase in the Dominican Republic, according to information provided Wednesday by the Superintendent of Banks, Alejandro Fernández W.
“The number of debtors or people who are using their access to formal credit, as a percentage of the workforce, reached its historical maximum, representing 28.1% of those who were of working age in March 2023.
This represents 44.1% of the economically active population at that time. Again, we acknowledge this result, bearing in mind our obligation to continue moving towards greater financial inclusion,” he reported.
In that regard, he specified that between June 2022 and June 2023, 216,801 new debtors were added to the system, exceeding by almost 100% the 118,917 gained between June 2021 and June 2022. In cumulative terms, the system registers 210,000 additional debtors compared to those prior to the health crisis.
Fernández W. explained that this is encouraging data, indicating that the banking market is playing a significant role in the post-pandemic economic recovery and serves as an indicator of inclusion. The official spoke during his presentation of results to staff.
