SANTO DOMINGO- The economic impact generated by guests who used Airbnb in the Dominican Republic during 2021 amounted to US$839 million, according to a study conducted by Oxford Economics.
The study “Economic Impact of Airbnb in the Dominican Republic”, conducted in October of last year, places the economic impact of short stays on the country at 1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during that period.
Analyzing by line items, the study maintains that of the aforementioned figure, US$226 million was for purchases, US$187 million for entertainment, US$177 million corresponded to restaurants, US$135 million to transportation to the destination, and US$114 million to local transportation.
The findings of the study on Airbnb, conducted by Oxford Economics, determined that 85.7% of guests who used the platform in the Dominican Republic in 2021 were non-resident visitors.
The report adds that 28,000 jobs were generated by the spending of guests who arrived at short-term rental accommodations during the aforementioned period.
The majority of guests came from the United States, according to the study, which also states that at that time, 52% of the hosts in the country were women, while 48% corresponded to stays headed by men.
When referring to the profile of guests who arrived at short-stay accommodations in 2021, they cite that 54% were women and 46% of visitors were men.
Regarding recommendations to guests, the study found that 48% received recommendations for restaurants and cafes, 30% for activities, 17% for cultural sites, and 21% for shops.
The study specifies that Airbnb's first listing in the Dominican Republic dates back to 2008, and also states that the launch of experiences in the country began in 2017.
