The Sosúa Sustainable Development Association (ADSS) has issued a plea to the authorities to invest in restoring the town's image as a tourist, cultural, and sustainable destination, because the growing international perception that it is a sex tourism destination compromises its potential and threatens quality investments.
“Sosúa possesses a unique cultural heritage in the region, it is a model of integration and productivity since the 1940s when Jewish refugees arrived, welcomed by the Dominican government during World War II, and created communities and built the foundations to develop a prosperous and unique community that enriches the Dominican tourist offer and deserves the full attention of the Ministries of the Presidency, Interior and Police and Tourism,” says the ADSS statement.
The ADSS reacted to the warning from Magaly Toribio, an expert in Tourism Marketing, who reiterated in an urgent tone the call to state agencies to remove the stigma of prostitution from this municipality on the north coast and promote a responsible tourism model, aligned with the guidelines of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), that protects local social and cultural values.
“Sosúa has everything it needs to shine brightly,” the organization emphasized in its statement, underscoring the need to promote its historical and natural heritage as cornerstones of development. This is because it is a community with a living legacy evident in its architecture, its active synagogue, a museum, and a cuisine that blends European and Caribbean influences, making it one of the most unique destinations on the North Coast.
Located minutes from Puerto Plata Airport, Sosúa is part of the Amber Coast tourist corridor, an area prioritized by the Ministry of Tourism in its national promotion strategy. Recent reports highlight its potential to diversify the country's tourism offerings and attract a more conscious visitor interested in authentic and sustainable experiences.
